In ancient Greece, the spirit of competition and the sporting ideal acquired a central position in society for the first time in human history. The cultivation of man's mental and intellectual abilities was in no way divorced from physical exercise; on the contrary, they mutually complemented each other. Gymnastics and sport were connected with the musical education of the young and with the entire development of the intellect. Religion, moreover, far from being opposed to this kind of education, gave it an established position in the great panhellenic sanctuaries, where the athletic and musical contests were held under the protection of the gods and the gaze of thousands of spectators from all over the Greek world. Both sportsmen and spectators were conscious of the fact that the day of the games represented the ultimate goal of a protracted period of training, and that victory would reflect glory on the cities that had produced the winners.
Countless volumes have been written about Greek civilization, its achievements, and its significance for the modern world. Anyone wishing to read a systematic, well-documented account of the history and meaning of sport in ancient Greece, however, would have difficulty in finding the relevant books.
