Ross Daly was born on 29th September 1952 in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. He is a distinguished composer and multi instrumentalist of Irish descent and lives on the Greek island of Crete. Daly was reared in England , the USA and Japan. Ιn his teens he saw Ravi Shankar play Monterey and Stanford University on the West Coast of the US which had a profound effect on him. This influenced his move from classical music to modal Indian classical music. Later he was to play with Shankar in Athens in the early nineties.

At home he grew up listening to music from Iraq where his parents had lived for a time. Hearing his mother play Arabic melodies on the piano triggered a response which led to him eventually taking up the study of the Sitar when the family returned to England in the late sixties.

In the early seventies Ross Daly began travelling throughout the Ottoman Empire and further east encountering new and strange instruments. He says his first encounter with the Cretan Lyra was when he visited Greece for the first time in 1971. In the early seventies he travelled throughout Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Daly is something of a polyglot and speaks Greek, Turkish, French and English . He studied the Lyra for sixteen years on the island of Crete with the late Kostas Mountakis and learnt to play the Laouto with Yannis Xilouris . He is a respected master musician in his own right and is an acknowledged virtuoso on the Cretan Lyra, the Greek laouto, the Turkish saz, the Arab oud (an instrument from which the guitar originates),the Persian tar, the Indian sarangi and the Afghan rabab.

From his base in Crete - Ross Daly is teaching and playing throughout Europe, the Near East and North America recording and producing various projects most notably the "Labyrinth Project", in 2003 he hosted a series of major concerts in the Cretan village of Choudetsi which featured amongst others the Tuvan throat singers - "Huun Huur Tu" , the Trio Chemirani from Iran, Ensemble Radio Kabul from Afghanistan, Kala Ramnath from India, and Georgi Petrov from Bulgaria.
